The Supreme Court (SC) has fixed April 14 as the date of hearing in the Senate vote case.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) has fixed a date for the hearing of an important case related to the verification of rejected votes in the election of the Chairman of the Senate.

A five-member constitutional bench, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, will hear the case on April 14. Senior Pakistan People’s Party leader Yousuf Raza Gilani had challenged the rejection of seven votes cast in his favor in the election of Chairman Senate in the High Court, but the Islamabad High Court had rejected his petition. Against the decision of the High Court, the Supreme Court was approached, on which the Supreme Court has now set a date for hearing by forming a constitutional bench. Yousuf Raza Gilani argues that the rejected votes were valid and were deliberately kept out of the election process.

Political and legal experts are calling the case an important development in the context of the transparent process of Senate elections and parliamentary rules and regulations. The focus now shifts to April 14, when the higher judiciary will give its final verdict on the constitutional issue.
