Federal Cabinet Agrees to Establish Constitutional Court, Azam Nazir Tarar’s Press Conference

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, while holding a press conference along with Federal Minister Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, said that an important meeting of the federal cabinet was convened today, which was chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif via video link.

He said that this is not the first time that the Prime Minister has chaired a meeting via video link. During the meeting, various constitutional and legal issues were discussed in detail.

Azam Nazir Tarar said that the government has decided after detailed consultation with the PPP, Muttahida Qaumi Movement and other coalition parties that the proposal for the establishment of the Constitutional Court will be presented in the parliament.  He said that the bill will be presented in the Senate of Pakistan today and later it will be referred to a parliamentary committee headed by Farooq H. Naik.

The Law Minister said that the bill will be thoroughly discussed in the Law and Justice Committees of the National Assembly and the Senate so that the views of all political parties can be included.

He further said that after the recent discussions regarding the transfer of judges, it has been proposed to give this authority to the Judicial Commission, so that the judicial process is transparent and organized.

Azam Nazir Tarar said that one of the major reasons for the postponement of elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was judicial matters, in this regard, a proposal to amend Article 243 of the Constitution is also under consideration.
