Introducing a major facility for electricity consumers, Lahore Electric Supply Company has decided to make the billing and meter reading system completely digital. Under this initiative, smart meters will be connected to the control room through modern technology, which will enable direct online transmission of electricity usage data.

According to LESCO officials, the process of meter reading will be automated through the installation of M2M SIMs, which will reduce dependence on traditional meter readers. Officials say that this system will be able to control delays in billing, overbilling and other complaints.

The new system has an automatic mechanism to disconnect the connection for defaulting consumers; however, as soon as the bill is paid, it will be possible to restore electricity through the online system. According to LESCO, this method will provide immediate relief to consumers and reduce unnecessary disruptions in power supply.

Under the project, consumers will also be provided with the facility to view their electricity bills on mobile phones or computers and submit bills using various digital payment methods. LESCO officials say that this initiative will play an important role in improving the overall performance of the institution.

According to energy and IT experts, a digital billing system can set a new standard of transparency and accountability for electricity distribution companies. Experts say that if this system is implemented with effective monitoring and cybersecurity, it will increase consumer confidence and enable long-term reforms in the electricity sector.
