12 Months of the Hijri Year
1. Muharram SACRED
The first month and one of the four sacred months.
Sunnah: The Prophet ﷺ encouraged fasting on the 10th (Ashura) to erase sins of the past year.
2. Safar
The second month of the lunar calendar.
Sunnah: The Prophet ﷺ clarified that Safar is not a month of bad luck or ill omens.
3. Rabi ul-Awwal
The month of the birth and migration (Hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Significance: A time to reflect on the Seerah (biography) and character of the Prophet ﷺ.
4. Rabi ul-Thani
Also known as Rabi al-Akhir. Marks the establishment of the early Muslim community.
5. Jumada al-Awwal
The fifth month, representing the midpoint of the transition into the new year.
6. Jumada al-Thani
The sixth month. In history, it was the month of the passing of Abu Bakr (R.A).
7. Rajab SACRED
One of the sacred months. Traditionally seen as the “month of sowing” for Ramadan.
Quran: One of the four months mentioned in Surah At-Tawbah where peace is paramount.
8. Shaban
The month of preparation for Ramadan.
Sunnah: The Prophet ﷺ fasted more in Shaban than in any other month except Ramadan.
9. Ramadan HOLIEST
The month of fasting and revelation.
Quran: “The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an” (2:185).
10. Shawwal
The month that begins with Eid-ul-Fitr.
Sunnah: Fasting 6 days in Shawwal is like fasting for a whole year (Sahih Muslim).
11. Dhul-Qadah SACRED
The 11th month and one of the sacred months.
Significance: A month of peace where war was prohibited to allow for safe Hajj travel.
12. Dhul-Hijjah SACRED
The month of Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha.
Sunnah: The first ten days are the most beloved days for righteous deeds (Bukhari).
