Amid the ongoing security crisis in the region and the changing geopolitical landscape, the visit of Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir to Iran has paved the way for a major diplomatic breakthrough. According to the ISPR, significant progress has been made towards a final understanding after 24 hours of intensive talks with the Iranian leadership in Tehran.
According to ISPR, these high-level contacts took place in a constructive atmosphere, aimed at managing the situation that emerged after the ceasefire of April 8, 2026, and reducing the ongoing high tension between Washington and Tehran. This strategic diplomacy of Pakistan is being closely watched at the global level.
According to sources, the current round of talks is not limited to traditional diplomacy, but now the talks have focused on sensitive issues such as the protection of trade routes in the Strait of Hormuz, the limitation of the Iranian nuclear programme, the lifting of US sanctions and guarantees of lasting peace in the region. In Tehran, Field Marshal Asim Munir met with Iranian President Masoud Peshmerga and the military and political leadership, where Iran acknowledged Pakistan’s timely and impartial role.
Pakistan’s central role in this regional diplomatic network became even more evident when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio openly praised Field Marshal Asim Munir’s efforts. The US Secretary of State said that Washington is in constant contact with the Pakistani military leadership at the highest level on this critical mission, and Pakistan has emerged as America’s most important and reliable partner in this entire process.
This diplomatic success comes at a time when US President Donald Trump has signalled that the talks are in the final stages and has warned that tough measures may be taken if no results are achieved within the stipulated time. Despite this pressure, Pakistan’s dynamic diplomacy has also helped bring other countries in the region, such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia, on a platform. Even China has strengthened the process through its peace initiative, which it has supported in Pakistan.
Regional analysts believe that Field Marshal Asim Munir’s visit is a reflection of Pakistan’s independent and balanced foreign policy, which aims to maintain a strategic balance with global powers while maintaining brotherly relations with neighbouring countries. From Beijing to Gulf capitals, it is currently being recognised that long-term peace in the Middle East is not possible without Pakistan’s involvement.
