A legal front has also opened against the recent increase in petroleum prices in the country, where the Judicial Activism Panel has challenged the government’s decision in the Lahore High Court and requested to withdraw the price increase. The petition has taken the position that the price hike was implemented without proper legal and administrative justification, which is directly affecting the people and the economy.

In a miscellaneous petition filed in the Lahore High Court, the court has been requested to order the federal government to review the recent hike and issue a direction to withdraw the hike in the prices of petroleum products.

According to the petitioner, the increase in fuel prices is not limited to transport costs alone, but its effects spread to daily necessities, food, the agricultural sector, industrial production and the services sector. Therefore, the direct burden of every price hike is transferred to the common citizen.

The petition has also taken the position that the government should provide a transparent and understandable basis for such decisions so that the people can know what are the real reasons for the price hike and on the basis of which economic factors it has been determined.

According to economists, the prices of petroleum products in Pakistan are affected by international crude oil prices, the value of the rupee, taxes, petroleum levy and other financial factors. However, after the change in prices, its effects also come to the fore on the overall inflation rate and public expenditure.

Analysts say that the recent petition is mainly an attempt to review the legal aspects of the government’s decision. The court will review various constitutional and legal points in this matter, including the admissibility of the petition, after which the further course of action will be decided.

On the other hand, the government is yet to come out with a formal position on the petition. It is likely that during the court proceedings, the relevant authorities will submit their response to the court regarding the pricing mechanism, financial requirements and other economic factors.

According to legal experts, courts generally review government policy decisions within constitutional limits, however, if legal or procedural questions are raised in a decision, clarifications can be sought from the relevant institutions.

The petition comes at a time when the ongoing debate on fuel prices, inflation and public spending in the country is intensifying. In the next hearing, the court will decide whether to proceed with the formal action on the petition or not, while directions may also be issued to the government to submit a response.

Following this development, the mechanism for determining petroleum prices has once again become a subject of public and legal debate, while the eyes of the business community, the transport sector and consumers are focused on the court’s next action.
