The Pakistan Stock Exchange ended trading on a positive note on Monday, but the overall picture of the market did not reflect a one-sided bullish sentiment. The benchmark KSE-100 index closed at 180,502.45 points, up 397.83 points, or 0.22 percent. The index had closed at 180,104.61 points in the previous session.

During the trading day, the KSE-100 touched a high of 181,158.87 points, while its low was 180,281.75 points. The index fluctuated in a limited range during the day and regained the 180,500-point level at the end.

Market data showed that investor interest on Monday was mainly in energy, oil marketing and refinery-related stocks. PSO, PPL, Attock Refinery, CNERGY and OGDC supported the overall performance of the KSE-100. According to the market report, PSO contributed the most to the index with a positive contribution of 260.12 points, while PPL contributed 199.20 points.

Attock Refinery also showed a significant performance and added 133.25 points to the index. CNERGY and OGDC were among the other major contributors, with a positive contribution of 64.54 and 64.29 points, respectively. These figures indicate that the role of energy-related companies in today’s bullishness was significant.

On the contrary, several major stocks in the market were on a selling trend. HBL had a negative impact of 142.65 points on the KSE-100, while FFC contributed 117.46 points to the decline. SYS, LUCK and HMB were also among the negative contributors to the index.

This difference reveals an important picture of the market. Although the KSE-100 closed positively overall, not all the major stocks included in the index joined the bullish trend. According to the available data, 43 components of KSE-100 closed in positive territory while 57 closed in negative territory. Therefore, it is more appropriate to call today’s rally a development fuelled by buying in a few key sectors rather than a broad-based rally.

The overall market also witnessed an increase in trading activity compared to the previous session. The ready market saw a turnover of about 1.048 billion shares, compared to 891.33 million shares in the previous session. The trading value also increased to about Rs 48.33 billion, compared to Rs 36.69 billion in the previous session. The total market capitalisation reached Rs 20.199 trillion.

In terms of volume, CNERGY stood out, with 312.52 million shares traded. D.S. Industries traded 124.77 million shares while K-Electric traded about 30.72 million shares. These figures indicate that despite the limited increase in the index, activity in certain specific stocks remained quite high.

CNERGY, HGFA, PSO, ATRL and SSGC were among the stocks that saw significant gains in price. On the other hand, GADT, SAZEW, HMB, IBFL and HBL recorded declines. Thus, there was a clear difference between different sectors and companies in the market at the same time.

The KMI-30 index, which consists of Sharia-compliant companies, also showed a positive performance on Monday. According to available market data, the KMI-30 closed at 254,618.01 points, up about 1,629.75 points, or 0.64 percent. The index also touched a high of 255,626.82 points during the day. The KMI-30 tracks the performance of highly liquid Sharia-compliant companies on the Pakistan Stock Exchange.

Energy-related stocks also featured prominently in the performance of the KMI-30. PSO, PPL, ATRL and OGDC played a key role in driving the index higher, while weakness in FFC, LUCK, SYS, HUBC and SAZEW limited the overall gains.

Looking at the recent market direction, investors are focused on local companies as well as global conditions. Global oil prices and the situation in the Middle East have affected Pakistan’s equity market sentiment in recent sessions. Strong buying in energy stocks on Monday seems significant in this broader context.

However, the current session’s data does not immediately confirm any major and widespread trend. The 0.22% increase in the KSE-100 was relatively limited, while more than half of the index’s components closed negative. Therefore, it will be more important to watch the trading volume, performance of index heavyweights and sectoral buying in the upcoming sessions to gauge the future direction of the market.

The year-on-year performance of the KSE-100 is also noteworthy. According to Pakistan Stock Exchange data, the index was up 23.22 percent year-on-year as of August 17, while it has recorded a 3.70 percent increase since the start of the calendar year. Despite this, daily price volatility and sectoral differences persisted at current levels.

Overall, Monday’s trading session brought a cautiously positive message to investors. The KSE-100 regained the 180,500-point level, trading volume increased and energy and refinery stocks played a prominent role. On the other hand, pressure remained in some large stocks of banking, fertilizer, technology and cement.

The real test for the market in the coming sessions will be whether buying in energy stocks spreads to other key sectors or the current bullishness remains limited to a few specific companies. It is important for investors to consider the internal structure of the market, volume and fundamental performance of companies, rather than just the index increase.
