The government has increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel. The new prices will be effective from August 18, 2026.

The price of petrol has increased by Rs 5.77 per litre. After this decision, the price of motor spirit has become Rs 331.20 per litre.

High-speed diesel has also become Rs 6.47 per litre more expensive. Its new price has been fixed at Rs 390.42 per litre.

Before the latest decision, petrol was being sold at Rs 325.43 per liter. Diesel was priced at Rs 383.95. Thus, the prices of both the products have increased significantly in a single revision.

This increase comes at a time when the global oil market is also volatile. Global geopolitical tensions have increased uncertainty about crude oil prices.

According to the latest global market report, Brent crude oil reached around $ 89.40 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate was also reported to be around $ 82.83 per barrel.

Changes in global oil prices are of direct importance to Pakistan. The country depends on imported oil for a large part of its energy needs.

Therefore, changes in global crude oil prices, import costs and currency exchange rates can affect the cost of local fuel. These factors remain important in the government’s petroleum pricing decisions.

The latest increase can also affect the budget of ordinary consumers. Especially for those who use motorcycles or cars daily, the monthly travel expenses may increase.

The impact of the increase in diesel prices can be relatively wide-ranging. Diesel is used more in freight, public transport and agricultural activities.

For this reason, increasing transport costs can put pressure on business costs. However, it would not be correct to link the change in the price of each item only to the price of fuel.

The prices of goods are also affected by demand, supply, rents, wages and other production costs. That is why the effects of petroleum prices are manifested in different sectors with different intensity.

The government has also made changes in the method of determining petroleum prices in recent times. Notifications regarding several prices of petroleum products have been issued on the website of the Ministry of Petroleum during August.

OGRA also issues notifications regarding the official prices of petroleum products. Its records contain several fresh notifications regarding prices for August 2026.

After the implementation of the new prices, consumers will have to pay more than Rs 331 per liter for petrol. The price of diesel has also gone above Rs 390 per litre.

The latest increase is a new cost pressure for consumers and the business sector. The direction of the global oil market in the coming days will be important for local prices.
