The Supreme Court has ordered the transfer of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical examination and treatment. The court has also issued clear instructions regarding medical care, meeting with family and contact with his sons.
A three-member bench on August 18 pronounced its verdict on the petitions related to Imran Khan’s medical facilities and meetings. According to the court order, he will be shifted to the hospital, and a medical examination will be conducted by expert doctors.
The court has directed the formation of a medical board comprising experts from various fields at Shifa International Hospital. The board will include physicians, general surgeons, internal medicine specialists, eye specialists and cardiologists.
Imran Khan’s personal physician Dr. Faisal Sultan has also been allowed to be part of the medical process. The court has also sought complete medical records so that his health can be comprehensively assessed.
The Supreme Court has directed that Imran Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital within two days. It has also been directed to keep him in the hospital till the next hearing. The next hearing is scheduled for September 16.
The court has also imposed precautionary conditions regarding the use of medical information. Imran Khan’s health information cannot be used for political purposes. In case of violation, the facilities granted by the court can be withdrawn.
In addition, it has been directed not to allow any public gathering outside the hospital. The aim of this measure is to maintain security and medical environment during treatment.
The court has also facilitated the issue of meeting the family. Imran Khan will be allowed to meet family members once a week. He will also be able to talk to his sons twice a week on the telephone.
Imran Khan’s family and the PTI have long expressed concerns about his health and medical facilities. Recent reports have also mentioned his vision problems. However, the final determination of his current medical condition will be made by the medical board report.
The court order cannot be considered a decision to release Imran Khan. It mainly relates to his treatment, medical examination and contact with his family. The ongoing legal cases against him remain in place.
Imran Khan has been in detention since August 2023 and has several cases pending against him. He and his party describe several cases as political in nature, while the state’s stance is based on legal action in various cases.
The political impact of the latest court decision could also be significant. Imran Khan is still an influential figure in Pakistani politics. However, the court has set clear conditions to keep medical matters separate from political activities.
The focus now will be on the medical board report and the practical phase of hospital transfer. This report is expected to shed more light on Imran Khan’s future medical care.
