Additional burden likely on September electricity bills

There is a possibility of an additional amount being included in September bills for electricity consumers. The Central Power Purchasing Agency Guaranteed (CPPA-G) has requested an increase of Rs 2.52 per unit in the electricity price under the fuel cost adjustment for July 2026.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has completed the hearing on this request and reserved the decision. Therefore, the proposed increase is not yet final.

According to CPPA-G, the actual fuel cost of electricity in July was Rs 9.61 per unit. In comparison, the reference fuel cost was Rs 7.9 per unit. Based on the difference between the two figures, an adjustment of Rs 2.52 per unit has been sought.

If NEPRA approves the application, a total of about Rs 36.54 billion can be collected from electricity consumers. The impact of this increase is likely to be reflected in the electricity bills of September.

According to the data, the cost of power generation increased significantly in July. The total fuel cost increased by about 38 percent compared to July last year. The major reasons for this increase included the cost of expensive imported fuel.

According to CPPA-G data, the fuel cost per unit of electricity supplied to the grid in July was about Rs 9.61. During this period, the cost of generating electricity from imported LNG was recorded at about Rs 47.37 per unit, while the cost of generating electricity from imported coal was recorded at about Rs 54.47 per unit.

According to reports, the cost of generating electricity from RLNG also increased significantly in July. The fuel cost of this sector increased due to expensive imported LNG cargo, which affected the overall cost of power generation.

On the other hand, NEPRA had approved a 75 paise per unit increase under the June 2026 fuel cost adjustment. This amount was collected in the electricity bills of August.

Now, the final decision of NEPRA regarding the July adjustment is awaited. If the authority approves the CPPA-G application, consumers may have to bear the additional financial impact in their September bills.
