The price of LNG in Pakistan has been significantly reduced. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has issued new LNG rates for September. These new prices will apply to the networks of Sui Northern and Sui Southern Gas Companies.
According to the latest OGRA notification, the price of LNG across both gas companies’ networks has dropped by more than 21 percent. This reduction has resulted in a significant change in the cost of imported gas.
For the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines network, the LNG price has been reduced by $3.83 per MMBtu, setting the new rate at $15.19 per MMBtu.
LNG prices have also been lowered for Sui Southern consumers. According to the notification, the rate on the company’s network was reduced by $3.91 per MMBtu, bringing the new price to $14.22 per MMBtu.
This price adjustment applies to the month of September. Global market conditions, import costs, and other relevant factors play a crucial role in determining LNG rates; consequently, fluctuations in the global energy market can impact the price of imported gas in Pakistan.
LNG is a vital component of Pakistan’s energy system. Beyond electricity generation, it is utilized for various industrial and commercial needs. Therefore, a reduction in its price is not confined to the gas sector alone but can also influence costs across various energy-consuming industries.
The price of LNG holds particular significance for industrial consumers, as energy costs are directly linked to production expenses. When rates decrease, business enterprises assess the potential impact on their overall costs.
For the average consumer, too, the question is the extent to which a drop in global or import prices translates into lower local energy costs. This depends on pricing mechanisms and other relevant factors.
Following the announcement of new rates by OGRA, the market and industrial sectors will now focus on when and to what extent the practical effects of lower LNG prices manifest in overall energy costs and business activities.
