Preparations for Basant 2027 have been intensified in Lahore. The Punjab government has announced the schedule of the festival to be held next year, announcing that the celebrations will be held from January 29 to February 7. Basant activities will be suspended for a day on February 5 due to Kashmir Day.
After this announcement, administrative activities related to Basant have also increased in Lahore. This time, not only organizing the festival is important for the government, but also providing a safe environment for the citizens.
Basant returned after a long hiatus in 2026. During the three-day festival, the administration restricted kite flying under specific rules. Action against dangerous strings and illegal goods is being given central status for 2027 as well.
The Lahore district administration has increased surveillance at the city’s entry points to stop the shipment of illegal kite flying equipment. According to official records, joint teams of police and administration are checking at various entry points. Cases and other legal action can be taken against those transporting prohibited goods to Lahore.
The most important question for citizens is what equipment can be used during Basant. According to the administration, only prescribed and approved kites and strings can be used. Metal or chemical strings and dangerous manjhe will not be allowed. Air firing and fireworks will also be included in the violation of rules.
Regulations are also important for kite makers and sellers. The government has already prepared to regulate the legal business through a licensing and registration system. The aim is to limit the market access of contraband goods while maintaining legal supply.
The duration of Basant 2027 will be longer than last year. Therefore, arrangements related to traffic, public convenience, policing and emergency services will also need to be more extensive.
It has been made clear at the official level that the protection of human lives will remain the top priority during the festival. Citizens have also been appealed to abide by the rules and report illegal goods.
For Lahore, Basant is not just an occasion for kite flying but also a festival linked to an ancient civic tradition. However, with the return of this tradition, security responsibilities have also increased. The main focus of the upcoming festival will be to ensure that the colors of the celebration are maintained and safety rules are also effectively implemented.
