Pakistan speeds up power reforms to curb losses and theft

Electricity consumers will face another additional charge in their October bills. NEPRA has approved the collection of an additional Rs 1.1086 per unit under the August fuel cost adjustment.

According to NEPRA’s decision, this adjustment will be applicable to the relevant consumers of the former WAPDA distribution companies, including K-Electric. The financial impact of the decision will be passed on to the consumers in their October bills.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency Guaranty had requested an increase of Rs 1.7267 per unit for fuel cost adjustment. After a detailed examination by NEPRA, the requested amount was reduced to Rs 1.1086 per unit.

According to the available data, the actual fuel cost of electricity in August was Rs 8.2084 per unit, while the reference cost was Rs 7.0998. Based on this difference, it has been decided to collect additional amount from the consumers.

The total additional collection from the consumers is likely to be around Rs 19 billion due to NEPRA’s decision.  This amount could further increase monthly expenses for consumers already facing high electricity bills and inflation.

However, Lifeline customers have been exempted from this additional charge. Electric vehicle charging stations and customers using certain prepaid tariffs will also be exempted from the fuel cost adjustment.

According to Nepra, consumers whose October bills were prepared before the official issuance of the decision can collect the adjustment amount through the next bill.
