Both houses of parliament have approved a government resolution on the imposition of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. After the National Assembly, the Senate also passed the resolution by a majority vote; however, members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) walked out of the house, opposing the decision, and raised protest slogans.
The Senate session was chaired by Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, in which the issue of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was discussed. Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry presented the government resolution in the house, while the opposition members opposed it.
During the meeting, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said that the discussion on the resolution related to the emergency is a constitutional requirement and the government wants to take the house into confidence on this issue. According to him, copies of the resolution had been provided to the members.
Azam Nazir Tarar also took a stand on the issue of the opposition presenting a resolution opposing the emergency. He said that the opposition’s resolution cannot be presented in the house, and its position can be given on the resolution presented by the government.
On the other hand, PTI members protested the government’s move and walked out of the house, opposing the resolution. The opposition expressed reservations on the issue, while the Senate Chairman expressed his desire to hear other members during the debate.
Earlier, the National Assembly had also passed a resolution on the imposition of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by a majority vote. The government and opposition members debated the issue for more than four hours in the National Assembly. The opposition protested and raised slogans opposing the resolution.
Constitutional procedures and the situation in the province were important topics during the debate on emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The government termed the resolution as a constitutional requirement, while the opposition opposed the move.
The Senate session was adjourned till 10:30 am on Friday. Despite the approval of the resolutions on emergency, political differences between the government and the opposition on the issue persisted.
It is important to note that the legal stages of approving the resolution in the houses and formally imposing an emergency under the constitution may be separate. Therefore, to know the final legal situation, it is necessary to verify the relevant official announcements and constitutional proceedings.
