Pakistan has recorded a significant increase in foreign investment during the first quarter of the current fiscal year. The total volume of investment from July to September was $3.65 billion. Public sector investment and funds received from the global financial market played a major role in this increase.
According to the State Bank of Pakistan, foreign investment in the period under review increased by more than 750% compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. Foreign investment in the private sector increased by 44% to $690 million, while its volume in the public sector was recorded at $2.89 billion.
One of the main reasons for the increase in investment was the issuance of $3 billion Eurobonds by Pakistan in the global market in September. Through these bonds, the government obtained funds from international investors. The transaction contributed to a significant increase in the overall figure for foreign investment.
Pakistan issued two tranches of Eurobonds in early September. According to the Ministry of Finance, the issue received offers of about $6 billion from global investors, while the government received $3 billion. The transaction was described as a significant step forward in Pakistan’s access to global capital markets.
However, the increase in foreign investment should not be understood as simply capital inflows into new factories, business projects or productive sectors. Investment in Eurobonds and other financial securities also form part of the overall figure. Therefore, it is important to look at the nature of the investment and its distribution across different sectors.
The increase in investment in the private sector is also important, as foreign direct investment can be a source of increased business activity, employment and productivity. However, its lasting economic benefits will depend on the sector in which the investment comes and whether it promotes long-term business activities or not.
The main challenge for Pakistan now is to ensure a sustainable increase in foreign direct investment along with the money received from the global financial market. For this purpose, economic stability, policy continuity, reduction in business costs and maintaining investor confidence are important.
