The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed lower on Monday as investors assessed the possibility of tighter monetary policy ahead of the State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) upcoming interest rate decision.
The benchmark KSE-100 index declined 453.63 points, or 0.27%, to settle at 165,966.09, compared with the previous close of 166,419.72, according to market data. The index fluctuated during the session, reflecting cautious trading amid uncertainty over the economic outlook.
Expectations surrounding the central bank’s monetary policy meeting on October 26 remained a key concern for investors. Market participants are assessing whether inflationary pressures could prompt the SBP to maintain a restrictive policy stance or consider raising the policy rate.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also emphasised the need for an appropriately tight monetary policy to ensure inflation returns sustainably to the central bank’s target range. Its latest staff-level agreement with Pakistan remains subject to approval by the IMF Executive Board.
Higher interest rates can increase borrowing costs for businesses and reduce the attractiveness of riskier investments. However, the impact on share prices depends on several factors, including corporate earnings, inflation expectations and broader economic conditions.
During Monday’s session, approximately 370.94 million shares changed hands, with their total value reaching Rs19.56 billion. Market capitalisation fell by around Rs52.43 billion to Rs18.43 trillion from the previous session.
Market direction in the coming days is likely to depend on the SBP’s policy announcement, inflation data and developments affecting domestic and international economic conditions. Investors will also monitor corporate financial results and movements in energy prices for further indications of the market’s direction.
The decline reflects investor caution ahead of an important policy decision, although the day’s market performance alone does not establish the extent to which interest rate expectations influenced individual stocks.
