LESCO Ends Free Electricity Units for Grade 18–20 Officers in Major Policy Shift

Electricity is likely to become more expensive for electricity consumers across the country, as electricity distribution companies have filed a request to collect an additional Rs 23 billion 326 million from consumers under the quarterly adjustment for July-September 2026.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) will hold a public hearing on this request on November 17, 2026, after which the approval of the proposed increase and its impact on consumers will be decided.

According to the reports, the distribution companies have sought a total positive quarterly adjustment of Rs 1.34 per unit. If Nepra approves the request, this amount can be collected from consumers during December 2026 to February 2027.

The largest portion of the request is for capacity charges, under which permission has been sought to collect Rs 38 billion 917 million. This amount also includes the effects of net metering and net billing units.

In addition, Rs 5 billion 597 million has been included in the cost of operations and maintenance expenses and Rs 7 billion 790 million in the cost of electricity transmission and distribution losses.

On the other hand, a negative adjustment of Rs 29 billion 252 million has also been proposed for the cost of incremental consumption package for consumers using additional electricity. Thus, after including various costs and concessions, the total additional collection request is Rs 23 billion 326 million.

The proposed quarterly adjustment may also apply to Karachi consumers, as K-Electric consumers will also be included in it under the government’s uniform tariff policy.

The NEPRA hearing will examine the financial claims and expenses of the distribution companies. The authority will take a final decision after examining the applications on how much increase per unit to allow.

It should be noted that the recovery of Rs 23.326 billion is currently a request by the distribution companies, it has not been approved by NEPRA. The final increase and its impact on consumer bills will be determined after the regulatory decision.
