3,200 new AI cameras to be installed in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: It has been decided to install 3,200 modern artificial intelligence (AI) cameras under Islamabad’s Safe City project, which aims to prevent crime in the city and make citizen safety more effective. The cost of the project has been fixed at Rs 17.4 billion, and its PC-1 has been submitted.

According to DG Safe City Islamabad, Shakir Hussain Dawar, there are currently 2,758 cameras installed in the city, out of which 700 cameras are equipped with AI technology. The new cameras will be equipped with advanced features such as facial recognition, vehicle number plate recognition, and monitoring of traffic violations.

Seven high-powered servers will also be installed under the project to increase the performance of new and old cameras. Plans are also under consideration to install 14 more servers, which will enable older cameras to benefit from AI.

DG Shakir Dawar said that 77 criminal gangs have been identified so far with the help of AI surveillance, out of which 32 have been arrested. Soon, modern cameras installed on roofs will be able to take clear pictures of people inside vehicles.
