New medical research indicates that a diet high in potassium, particularly from sources like bananas, can significantly lower the risk of heart disease.

A study conducted by experts at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark looked at 1,200 heart patients with defibrillators and low potassium levels. These patients were advised to increase their potassium intake through diet, and some were also given supplements. The results were remarkable: patients who achieved normal or high potassium levels had a 24% lower risk of irregular heartbeat, heart failure, or death.

The research highlights the crucial role of potassium in heart function. Common and natural sources of this mineral include bananas, avocados, cabbage, beets, and spinach. According to the researchers, consuming more potassium is an effective way to counteract the negative effects of the high-sodium, modern diet.

Experts explained that while the human body has historically thrived on a low-sodium, high-potassium diet, today’s eating habits are the opposite. They emphasized that increasing potassium intake is a cheap, natural, and simple way for both heart patients and the general public to improve heart health. The researchers, speaking at the European Society of Cardiology conference, urged people to reduce sodium and increase potassium in their diets for better cardiovascular well-being.
