Weekly bearish in PSX

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) ended trading on a positive note on Wednesday, August 12, with the benchmark KSE-100 index closing at 180,311.21 points, up 464.53 points or 0.26 percent. The index also touched a high of 180,901.26 points during the day, according to the latest official market data.

The trading session began at around 179,931 points. The index hit a low of 179,920.10 points during the day, after which an improvement in buying took it back above the psychological threshold of 180,000. In the previous session, the KSE-100 index closed at 179,846.68 points.

The overall market activity was also noteworthy. According to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, over 744.24 million shares were traded in the ready market, while the total value of trading was Rs32.19 billion.  381,450 transactions were recorded during the session.

The market breadth was also positive. A total of 563 companies were traded, of which 249 shares rose, 211 declined, while 103 shares closed unchanged. These figures indicate that the day’s improvement was not entirely limited to a limited number of shares.

Selected stocks from energy, banking, cement and other key sectors played a role in the index’s recovery. According to market reports, buying in oil and gas exploration, banking, auto and energy-related stocks supported the overall sentiment.

Within the KSE-100, Pakistan Oil Fields, Murree Petroleum, Habib Bank, Hub Power and Bank Al Habib were among the prominent positive contributors. On the other hand, declines in Maple Leaf Cement, Engro Fertilizers, OGDC, United Bank and Fauji Fertilizer limited the index’s further rally.

An important aspect of the recent market trend is that investors have shown renewed interest in selected stocks after the decline of the previous trading session. As a result of this recovery, the index was able to regain the 180 thousand level, however, it is still premature to call the current situation a definitive sign of continued bullishness.

Investors are also cautious. Although most companies saw positive changes in their shares, the decline in 211 companies indicates that the buying in the market was not uniform. Therefore, along with the overall level of the index, the market breadth and the performance of various sectors will also be important to understand the future direction.

Another prominent index, KMI-30, also showed positive performance. This index closed at 253,344.42 with an increase of 336.71 points or 0.13 percent. Its highest level was 254,300.61 and the lowest level was 252,492.13 points.

Overall, Wednesday’s session paints a positive recovery picture, but it would not be appropriate to draw a final conclusion about the long-term trend of the market based on a single-day increase. In the coming sessions, trading volume, performance of major sectors and the movement of the index around the 180,000 level could provide important clues.

Investors’ attention is also likely to be focused on domestic economic data, corporate financial results, policy developments and global financial conditions in the coming days. Positive developments in these factors could strengthen the current trend of the market, while in the event of a major negative stimulus, recent gains could also come under pressure.
