The federal government has unveiled a high-stakes strategy to navigate Pakistan’s turbulent economic waters, choosing to absorb billions in losses to protect mainstream motorists while passing on record-breaking costs to the aviation and rural industrial sectors. In a move that highlights the administration’s struggle to contain inflation, a staggering Rs. 23 billion subsidy has been green-lit to keep Petrol and High-Speed Diesel prices stagnant from March 14 to March 20, even as other essential fuels skyrocket.

This “protective shield” for urban commuters comes at a heavy cost elsewhere, as Light Diesel Oil—a staple for small-scale industry and agricultural machinery—has been dealt a crushing blow with a Rs. 67.51 per liter increase, pushing its price to a historic Rs. 302.52. The impact is being felt equally in the skies, where a 13% surge in Jet Fuel has added Rs. 45.73 to every liter, a move that aviation experts warn will trigger an immediate spike in ticket prices, further isolating Pakistan’s travel industry.

The Ministry of Energy’s latest notification reveals a complex fiscal balancing act: while the government maintains a heavy Petroleum Levy of Rs. 105.37 on Petrol and Rs. 55.24 on Diesel to satisfy revenue targets, it is simultaneously injecting Rs. 49.63 per liter in subsidy back into Petrol and Rs. 75.05 per liter into Diesel. This “give-and-take” approach aims to prevent a total transport shutdown, yet the Rs. 39.20 hike in Kerosene Oil (now Rs. 358.01) signals a harsh winter ahead for the country’s most vulnerable populations who rely on the fuel for basic survival. As the 23-billion-rupee cushion only covers a one-week window, the nation remains on edge, watching whether this temporary relief can withstand the relentless pressure of the global energy market.
