The confidence of investors in the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday improved considerably, leading to a strong buying tide in the stock exchange market, which saw the major indices KSE 100 and KMI 30 end with robust gains. Banking, fertiliser, energy, oil and gas and cement companies were the focus of buying in the market, which gave a positive turn to the overall business environment.

The KSE 100 index opened trading at 175,600.30 points in the benchmark. In the early hours, the index dipped to 175,153.17 points, but investors’ buying activity kept the market moving higher. The index hit a high of 178,588.34 points in the trading session and ended up at 178,262.34 points, up 7,241.13 points, or 4.23 percent from the previous session.

Investors were also very interested as more than 385.16 million shares from the companies in the KSE 100 index were bought and sold.

The KMI 30 index, which is built based on the principles of Sharia, also continued to move in a positive trend. The index started at 247,629.78 points and dipped to 246,794.53 points in the trading session before rallying up to 251,984.91 points. At the close of trading, the index closed at 251,510.37 points, up 10,876.50 points or 4.52 percent.

142.71 million shares of companies included in the KMI 30 were traded, indicating that there was a significant increase in investor interest in the Islamic investment sector as well.

The main drivers for this rally in the market have been the large companies. The most positively impacting stock in the KSE 100 was United Bank Limited (UBL) with an upward movement of 961.45 points in the index. This was followed by Engro (437.11 points), Fauji Fertiliser Company (FFC) (407.52 points), Meezan Bank (MEBL) (374.80 points) and Lucky Cement (LUCK) (364.40 points).

Likewise, Engro was the highest contributor to the increase in the MI 30 by 1,333.42 points. The Hub Power Company (HUBC) contributed 1,018.95 points, Lucky Cement 1,042.12 points, Meezan Bank 1,071.87 points and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) 913.15 points.

According to the data, despite the excellent performance on a daily basis, the picture of the two indices on an annual basis was different. On a calendar year-to-date (CYTD) basis, the KSE 100 index rose by 2.42 percent, but declined by 1.13 percent on a financial year-to-date (FYTD) basis. Likewise, the MI 30’s gain for the calendar year was 1.20 percent but the financial year’s gain was 2.26 percent.

Market experts said that Monday’s rally was across the board, and there was simultaneous buying in several key sectors such as banking, energy, fertilisers, oil and gas and cement. They state that the volume of trading and investment in high-value companies suggests investors are relatively positive about the coming economic indicators, financial performance of companies and potential policy decisions.

The positive trend on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) seems to be gaining momentum, driven by analysts’ optimism that a continuation of economic stability, coupled with expectedly good corporate earnings and investor confidence, could further improve the situation. The trading session on Monday was another clear example of the general trend of the broad buy that occurred on both conventional and Sharia-compliant market indices, as the market closed strongly.
