With the start of the tax year 2026, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has started the process of receiving annual income tax returns. The agency has appealed to all eligible citizens, salaried individuals, the business community and companies to file their returns on time so that the legal requirements can be fulfilled within the stipulated period.

According to the FBR, taxpayers can submit their income tax returns from today, while the last date for filing returns is September 30, 2026. Officials say that submitting returns before the due date will help avoid unnecessary delays and potential problems.

The agency has clarified that the return should include income, expenses, assets, investments, bank details and other financial records with complete accuracy. Incomplete or incorrect information may lead to clarification, verification or other legal action in the future.

According to sources, the FBR has the authority to scrutinise returns submitted under the Income Tax Ordinance. For this purpose, information available in various government databases, including property, bank accounts, vehicle registration, travel records and other financial details, can be used within the legal framework to verify the information provided.

Tax authorities expect that millions of new entrepreneurs will become part of the tax system this year due to the special registration scheme introduced for small traders. According to initial estimates, the registration of about 3 million small traders will further widen the tax net and help strengthen the documented form of the economy.

Economists say that including more people in the tax system can help increase revenues, improve financial discipline and promote transparent economic activities. According to them, timely return filing is not only a legal requirement but also strengthens confidence in the national financial system.

The FBR has once again appealed to eligible taxpayers to file their income tax returns as soon as possible instead of waiting for the deadline, provide all financial information correctly and ensure implementation of tax laws. This initiative is not only a fulfilment of individual responsibility but is also considered an important part of a collective effort to stabilise the country’s economy.
