President Zardari Orders Rs 2.41 Crore Refund to Bank Fraud Victims, Upholds Ombudsman Ruling

Islamabad: In response to 31 bank fraud victims’ requests to the banking ombudsman, President Asif Ali Zardari has told six banks to return Rs 2.4136 crore to them. The victims had fallen for scams in which con artists pretended to be bank employees and used false phone calls to get private banking information.

An official statement from the Presidency says that the President agreed with the banking ombudsman’s decisions in favor of the victims and reaffirmed his pledge to giving those harmed justice and instant relief. After getting the customers’ personal banking information, the money was taken out of their accounts.

Customers who were affected went to their banks to ask for help but were not given any. This is why they turned to the banking ombudsman for help. The statement made it clear that even though the ombudsman made decisions that were good for the banks, they still filed petitions to question those decisions.

In answer, President Zardari stressed again how important the financial ombudsman was as a key organization for quickly and cheaply settling financial issues through the judicial system. People should use the ombudsman’s services to deal with banking problems, like fraud cases, he said.
