Lahore: In the proposed budget for the financial year 2025-26, the Punjab government has proposed a significant increase in the registration fees of vehicles and motorcycles, which is causing increasing anxiety in public and industrial circles.

The Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Department has sent formal proposals to the government to increase the fees, which can be implemented immediately if they become part of the budget.

According to sources, the registration fee for vehicles up to 1000 cc has been increased from Rs 1200 to Rs 5000, while for vehicles from 1000 to 1800 cc, it has been recommended to increase the fee from Rs 2000 to Rs 11000. In addition, it has been proposed to increase the registration fee for vehicles above 1800 cc from Rs 3000 to Rs 22000.

The current Rs 4,000 fee for Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTV) has been recommended to be increased to Rs 11,000, which may also be a cause of concern for commercial vehicle owners.

An increase in the registration fee for motorcycles is also being considered; however, the final rate will be revealed at the time of the budget.

Experts say that these measures may increase the government’s revenue, but as a result, both the common man and the car industry may face financial pressure. There is a public outcry against this increase, and many citizens have demanded that the government review the decision.

On the other hand, government sources maintain that these reforms are aimed at making the system transparent and eliminating fake registrations.
