Reports from international media indicate that a majority of members in Iran’s key clerical body have reached a consensus regarding the country’s next supreme leader.
According to British media outlets, most members of the Assembly of Experts are believed to support the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as the next supreme leader of Iran. However, a small number of members reportedly hold different views.
Sources say that the differences in opinion are not linked to political rivalries but rather reflect sincere discussions among members over the leadership decision.
Meanwhile, Arab media reports suggest that the official announcement of the new supreme leader may be delayed due to security concerns. Discussions are also ongoing among members of the Assembly of Experts about how to fulfil the traditional procedure of meeting the new leader before making the announcement public.
A member of the Assembly, Mir Bagheri, said that a few obstacles remain in the process of selecting the leadership and that efforts are underway to resolve them.
Another member of the clerical body, Ahmad Alamolhoda, reportedly stated that the new supreme leader has already been selected through voting. However, he added that the official announcement of the name would be made at a later stage.
At the same time, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi presented a more cautious stance during an interview with American media.
Araghchi said that no one currently knows who the next supreme leader will be and noted that many rumours are circulating about the possible successor.
He emphasised that the final decision will only become clear after the Assembly of Experts holds its official session and formally announces the chosen leader.
The foreign minister added that whoever is selected by the Assembly will become Iran’s next supreme leader, noting that the Iranian people have already chosen the members of the Assembly through elections.
According to him, the responsibility now rests with the Assembly of Experts to fulfil its constitutional duty and finalise the leadership decision.
