A significant development has come to light regarding the country’s military leadership, where President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have approved the summary of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s appointment as Chief of Defence Forces. After this decision, he will also head the newly formed defence leadership along with the post of Chief of Army Staff.
According to the official announcement, the post of Chief of Defence Forces will be for the next five years, and Field Marshal Asim Munir is the first officer of the country to hold this position. The government says that the aim of this new structure is to promote better coordination between the three armed forces.
In this regard, the President has also approved a two-year extension in the tenure of Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, which will come into effect on March 19, 2026, after the completion of his current term.
A defense expert said that these decisions have been taken keeping in mind the changing geopolitical situation in the region, which will maintain harmony and continuity in Pakistan’s defense structure.
The President also expressed his prayers and best wishes for the success of both the top military figures.
