Bank Statements Alone Are Not Proof of Income, an Important Decision of the Supreme Court

ISLAMABAD: In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has clarified that a bank statement, by itself, cannot be considered conclusive evidence of income.

The decision was rendered by a two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui. The judgment was authored by Justice Siddiqui.

According to the written order, entries in a bank statement merely reflect financial transactions and do not automatically amount to proven income. “Bank transactions cannot be treated as income unless backed by verifiable supporting evidence,” the court observed.

The ruling emphasizes that transactional data, while indicative of financial movement, does not by default establish lawful earnings or revenue unless corroborated with admissible proof.

Legal experts believe the judgment will have implications for tax assessments, anti-corruption investigations, and income verification standards in legal proceedings.
