ISLAMABAD: Following a more than four-year break, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will resume flights to Europe. This was a major milestone for the national airline.

“The green flag has once again started flying in the skies of Europe,” Khawaja Asif said at a ceremony, expressing delight in PIA’s return to European skies. Additionally, he said that direct flights to the UK will soon start, improving Pakistan’s connectivity and trade prospects.

The Defense Minister highlighted the tremendous reaction to the reopened service by sharing the news that PIA aircraft PK-749, carrying 323 passengers, was setting off for Paris. “The Paris flight achieved 100 percent booking, reflecting passengers’ trust and eagerness to see PIA reconnect with European destinations,” he said.

This comes after PIA’s European operations were suspended for an extended period of time in mid-2020 due to regulatory issues brought up by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The national airline’s renewed dedication to compliance and operational efficiency is shown by the reinstatement of these flights.

It is anticipated that the restoration of direct flights to Paris would strengthen ties between Pakistan and Europe in the areas of tourism, commerce, and diaspora. The action has been well received by passengers and industry participants, who see it as a step in reviving PIA’s worldwide footprint.

Khawaja Asif highlighted the government’s commitment to guaranteeing long-term advancements in the aviation industry while commemorating this accomplishment. Expectations for more PIA foreign route extensions, including planned flights to the UK soon, have increased as a result of the news.

This achievement represents a sea change in PIA’s quest to regain its standing as Pakistan’s top airline, since the company is now able to fly in European airspace.
