Increase in air pollution: National Institute of Health directs the public to be careful

The National Institute of Health has issued instructions to citizens to be careful in view of the increasing smog situation in the country. According to the National Institute of Health, toxic components in air pollution, combined with cold weather, can increase the risk of pneumonia and other respiratory diseases.

The advisory states that children, the elderly and people with pre-existing conditions may be more affected by the harmful effects of smog, so they need to be especially careful.

According to the NIH, Lahore, Multan, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi and Islamabad are most likely to be affected by smog, while air pollution levels in Lahore have increased further, so citizens should avoid leaving their homes unnecessarily.

The advisory also directs health authorities and experts across the country to take immediate action. Children have been specifically asked not to stay out of their homes for long in smog-ridden areas and to wear masks when going out.
