The Government of Punjab has issued a revised policy on the use of vehicles and petrol for government officers, under which new facilities have been provided to officers of different grades. According to the notification, the Chief Secretary and IG Punjab will be allowed to own vehicles of three different engine capacities, two of which will be provided with 800 liters of petrol per month, while there will be no limit for the larger vehicle.
Grade 22 and 21 officers will be given 200 liters of petrol per month for personal use, while the quantity of fuel for official use was unlimited. In the old policy, the quantity of petrol for senior officers was relatively less and the engine size of the vehicles was also limited.
Grade 18 Deputy Secretary will now use 175 liters of petrol per month for a 1500 cc vehicle, while in the previous policy he was allowed a 1000 cc vehicle and 150 liters of petrol. Similarly, the staff officers of the Chief Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary will be provided with a 1300 cc vehicle and 150 liters of petrol per month, while the staff officers of provincial ministers will be entitled to 125 liters of petrol per month. According to government sources, the new policy aims to provide better transportation facilities to administrative officers, however, the move is also expected to be debated in public circles as fuel costs have already become a major issue in the country.
