Punjab’s educational landscape underwent a historic transformation today as the provincial government moved to a 4-day working week for all educational institutions. The policy, formalised through a notification dated April 1, 2026, marks a departure from traditional scheduling, prioritising administrative efficiency and teacher productivity.
Strategic Shift in Academic Governance The decision to close schools on Fridays, alongside the existing Saturday and Sunday holidays, reflects a growing global trend of condensed work weeks. Minister for Education Rana Sikandar Hayat took to social media to validate the notification, asserting that the “future of education requires flexibility.” He noted that the extra day off would allow teachers more time for professional development and lesson planning.
Enforcement and Timing Structure The Department of School Education has made it clear that the new timings are mandatory. For double-shift schools, the afternoon session has been extended until 5:30 PM to ensure that the core curriculum is not compromised despite the shorter week.
- Monday to Thursday (Standard): 8:00 AM — 1:30 PM
- Friday to Sunday: Closed (Weekly Holidays)
Administrative Oversight District Education Authorities across Punjab have been put on high alert to enforce the new “4-day” rule. While the notification does not specify an end date, it mentions that the schedule will remain in place “until further orders.” Education experts suggest that this move could significantly reduce the operational costs of school buildings, including electricity and transport, while providing a much-needed reprieve for students facing high academic pressure.
