Section 144 imposed across Punjab: a 7-day ban on gatherings and processions

The Punjab Home Department has imposed Section 144 in view of the law and order situation across the province. According to the spokesperson, this decision has been taken due to the potential threats of terrorism and concerns about public order. Officials say that all types of gatherings, processions and demonstrations have been banned immediately to avoid any untoward incident.

According to the official statement, intelligence reports had warned that sensitive gatherings could become targets of terrorism. Reports also expressed fears that miscreants could target scholars or important figures participating in a large gathering and incite communal riots. In view of these concerns, the provincial government took proactive steps and imposed Section 144.

According to the notification, public gatherings of four or more people will be banned in Punjab, and no gathering will be held at any public place without permission. However, law enforcement officials on duty will be exempted from this ban. Similarly, gatherings related to marriages, funerals and burials, meetings of government and semi-government offices and court proceedings have also been declared exempt from the ban.

The Home Department has also imposed a complete ban on the display of weapons and their use in public places. This ban will apply to all types of weapons, licensed and unlicensed. Officials say that these restrictions under Section 144 have been imposed initially for seven days.

The spokesperson clarified that all possible steps are being taken to maintain law and order in the province and protect the lives and property of the people. The district administration and police have been directed to ensure strict implementation of the notification.
