In view of the possible change in electricity prices, an important development has come to light in the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), where electricity distribution companies have submitted an application for recovery of additional amounts under the second quarter of the financial year. According to officials, this adjustment will be made on the basis of expenses for October-December 2025.
According to sources, the companies have sought permission to recover more than Rs 10 billion from consumers. This amount has been sought due to the difference in quarterly fuel and other costs. The NEPRA authority will decide how much the price per unit will increase after a detailed review.
Along with the same application, a claim of about Rs 24.25 billion has also been submitted in terms of capacity charges. Power sector officials say that paying these expenses is inevitable to ensure the availability of power plants and maintain production capacity. However, according to energy experts, this will have a direct impact on the electricity bills of consumers.
The reports also state that a reduction in operation and maintenance costs has been recorded, which has shown a saving of more than one and a half billion rupees, but the overall financial pressure remains.
Importantly, the proposed adjustment will be applicable to consumers across the country as well as to K-Electric consumers in Karachi, which may affect millions of domestic and commercial consumers.
NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing of this case on February 17. During this time, the relevant institutions and consumers will be able to submit their objections and suggestions. Only after the decision is made, the final announcement of the possible increase or decrease in electricity tariffs will be made.
According to experts, in view of the increasing costs in the energy sector, the series of quarterly adjustments may continue in the future, for which consumers will have to plan their budgets.
