Lahore: Sugar price and shortage are once again in the headlines in Lahore, sugar supply in major wholesale centers including Akbari Mandi has remained nominal, which has increased the worries of the citizens.
The district government is taking action against the sugar mafia, but practically no improvement has been seen. According to sources, only one truck of sugar is reaching Akbari Mandi daily, which is very less compared to the demand of this big market.
The official ex-mill price of sugar has been fixed at Rs 165 per kg, but retailers are hesitant to go beyond Rs 173 per kg because they are afraid of being fined. As a result, neither sugar is available nor the price is balanced.
It should be remembered that from May to July, the government exported 765,000 metric tons of sugar, which generated a revenue of Rs 112 billion, but the local market is paying a heavy price for this export policy.
