Karachi: The rising prices of sugar have further increased the problems of the citizens. The price of sugar per kg has reached Rs 200 in various cities including Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta, which is considered the highest level in recent months.

According to retail shopkeepers, sugar is currently being sold in Peshawar for Rs 190 to 200 per kg, while just two weeks ago the same sugar was available for Rs 180. The wholesale market is also witnessing an increase in prices, where the new rate of sugar has reached Rs 179 per kg.

The situation in Quetta is no different, where the retail price has reached Rs 186 to 190 per kg and sugar is being sold at the wholesale level for Rs 183 per kg.

In Karachi, the wholesale price of sugar has also increased by Rs 2 to Rs 180 per kg, while shopkeepers are selling it at retail for Rs 185 to Rs 200 per kg.

On the other hand, the government has announced to import 500,000 tonnes of sugar to control prices. However, former caretaker federal minister Fawad Hassan Fawad has raised objections to this decision and demanded a review of it.

Experts say that if immediate steps are not taken, sugar prices may increase further, which will further burden the common man with inflation.
