Federal government’s big decision: Suspended SRO for global gold trade reinstated

After the approval of the federal cabinet, the Ministry of Commerce has issued an official notification to reinstate the suspended SRO for global gold trade.

According to the official announcement, the existing framework for import and export of precious metals and jewelry will remain intact; however, some necessary amendments have been made to bring more transparency and automation to the system.

The Ministry of Commerce says that the framework will be continued with better monitoring and a digital tracking system, which will reduce the chances of illegal trade.

It is worth mentioning that the ban on the import and export of gold was imposed in May this year after various institutions complained about an increase in smuggling. Later, on May 6, 2025, the SRO regulating the gold trade was suspended for 60 days.

According to sources, no new complaints related to gold smuggling have been reported in recent months, after which the government decided to restore the SRO.
