Punjab Finalizes Cleanliness Policy: New Fines and Awareness Drive Announced

To make the sanitation system in Punjab more effective, Provincial Minister for Local Government Zeeshan Rafique has announced an important policy in which the system of collection of sanitation fees and fines has been finalised. This announcement was made during a high-level meeting held on Saturday.

Zeeshan Rafique clarified that the purpose of the new fines is not to increase the government’s revenue but to bring about a positive change in the attitudes of citizens and create awareness of collective responsibility for a clean environment. He said that sanitation is a shared responsibility and lasting improvement is not possible without the participation of the people.

The Minister for Local Government directed the Clean Punjab Authority to launch a comprehensive awareness campaign against littering, in which public relations programmes, awareness camps and social media platforms will be used effectively.

He said that the monthly sanitation fee in rural areas starts from Rs 200, while in urban areas it starts from Rs 300, while a separate fee has been fixed for commercial units. According to officials, the payment system will soon be made fully digital.

According to environmental expert Dr Amjad Ali, if awareness is prioritised along with fines, this policy can bring about a lasting positive change in the attitudes of citizens and will be helpful in keeping cities clean.
