A new and unusual phase of leadership transition has begun in Iran. After the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, an atmosphere of uncertainty has arisen in domestic politics. According to experts, this moment could prove to be one of the most important periods in Iran’s recent history.

The Iranian constitution makes it clear that an interim arrangement will be established immediately if the position of Supreme Leader becomes vacant. For this purpose, a transitional council consisting of President Masoud Peshkeshian and the head of the judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ezhe, will run state affairs. During this time, efforts will be made to maintain continuity in government policies so that internal stability is not affected.

On the other hand, the permanent Supreme Leader will be elected by the Assembly of Experts. This assembly holds a very important position in Iran’s religious and constitutional structure. Its members are elected scholars, whose qualifications are vetted by the Guardian Council. The Assembly of Experts is expected to convene soon to elect a new leader.

Various names are being floated in political circles. According to some observers, the leadership process will be determined by internal consensus to avoid any kind of political division. The previous leadership transition in Iran took place after the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, when Khamenei was elected Supreme Leader.

The current situation is also important because Iran is facing recent war tensions and international pressure. Experts say that the election of the new Supreme Leader will affect not only Iran’s domestic policy but also the overall political direction of the Middle East. In the coming days, the eyes of the international community will be focused on Tehran, from where important decisions regarding the future of the region are expected.
