Summer Load Shedding Likely in Pakistan Amid LNG Shortage and Power Plant Fuel Issues

The potential power crisis in Pakistan ahead of the arrival of summer has increased public concern, while government circles are considering emergency measures to meet the demand for electricity.

According to top officials, the government is preparing to introduce measures such as limited load shedding, power conservation campaigns and fuel cost adjustments to keep the power system stable.

According to sources, there is a fear of a significant reduction in LNG supply, which could affect a significant part of the country’s power generation. If this situation persists, gas supply to power plants may be severely limited from next month.

Due to the increased use of air conditioners and cooling systems in summer, the demand for electricity is likely to reach 28,000 MW. Although demand is relatively low at the moment, experts say that the increase in load during the evening hours will increase the pressure on the system.

According to government estimates, consumers may face power outages of 2 to 3 hours per day, while this period is also possible to increase in some areas.

Moreover, the impact of coal supply to the power plants in Sahiwal and Jamshoro is expected to reduce electricity production by up to 1,800 MW, which could put further pressure on the overall system.

Experts say that if fuel supply is not restored soon, there is a possibility of both an increase in electricity tariffs and prolonged load shedding, the effects of which will be significant on domestic consumers and the business sector.
