Karachi Swelters Under Harsh Summer Spell Amid Dusty Conditions

A wave of intense heat coupled with dry and dusty winds swept through Karachi on Wednesday, making weather conditions increasingly uncomfortable for residents as temperatures climbed above the 40-degree mark.

The city remained under the influence of strong southwest winds for most of the day, creating a hot and dry atmosphere rarely seen at this intensity along the coastal belt. Officials at the Pakistan Meteorological Department said the mercury reached 40.1 degrees Celsius, while humidity levels remained comparatively low, reducing the usual sea breeze effect.

From early morning onwards, gusty winds carrying dust continued to blow across different parts of the metropolis, affecting traffic movement and outdoor activities. Many residents complained of eye irritation, dehydration and breathing discomfort as the heatwave tightened its grip on the city.

Weather experts said the ongoing dry conditions have changed Karachi’s typical summer pattern, where humidity usually dominates. Instead, the city experienced scorching winds and an unusually harsh daytime environment.

Across Sindh, temperatures remained exceptionally high. Hyderabad, Sukkur and Mohenjo-Daro were among the hottest locations, each recording temperatures around 45°C, while Nawabshah and Mithi also remained under severe heat stress.

Officials warned that the prevailing weather pattern could continue over the next 24 hours, with hot and dry conditions likely in most districts of the province.

However, some relief may develop in upper Sindh, where partly cloudy conditions and isolated thunderstorms are expected in Ghotki and nearby areas.

Health specialists have advised the public to minimise direct sun exposure during daytime hours, increase fluid intake and avoid strenuous outdoor activity as the risk of heat-related illnesses continues to rise.
