According to the latest available reports, the Election Commission has proposed polling for the local body elections in Punjab on December 14, 2026, however, this is not the final election schedule yet. The final program will be issued after taking feedback from the Punjab government.
Local body elections in Punjab, important consultation expected on the proposed schedule
Local body election activities in Punjab have once again gained momentum. The Election Commission of Pakistan has proposed December 14, 2026 as the date for polling in the province. The commission has sent the proposed election program to the Punjab government for feedback. The final schedule will be issued after approval.
According to the proposed program, the initial phase of the election process will begin in late October. Candidates will be able to submit nomination papers from October 27 to 30. It has been proposed to conduct the scrutiny of the papers from November 2 to 5.
After this, the phase of objections and appeals will come in the election process. Candidates will be able to file appeals from November 7 to 11. The respective election tribunals will decide on the appeals between November 12 and 16. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures has been proposed as November 18.
The final list of candidates under the proposed programme will be released on November 19. Election symbols will be allotted the next day, i.e. November 20. After this, polling will be held on December 14, while the results are proposed to be released by the returning officers by December 17.
This development has come at a time when consultations have already been held in several stages on the issue of holding local body elections in Punjab. In August, the provincial government had proposed to hold elections between December 15, 2026 and January 15, 2027. Later, the Election Commission prepared the current draft programme.
Now the provincial government’s opinion will be important in the next phase. The commission has clarified that the current programme is a draft. Therefore, the proposed dates cannot be considered as the final election schedule. The final status of the election program will be clear only after the government’s consultation is completed and the Election Commission approves it.
The issue of local government elections is also important for the common voter, as local governments are directly involved in civic amenities and local-level administrative matters. Therefore, after the announcement of the final schedule, the attention of candidates as well as voters will be focused on the election preparations and the details of their respective constituencies.
