Government and opposition back on the negotiating table amid political tension

The ongoing talks between the government and the opposition in Islamabad have entered a crucial phase. The parties tried to reduce political tension through talks, however, differences still exist on the issues of long march and meeting with founder PTI. The final direction of the talks will be clear from the upcoming consultation.

The second round of talks was chaired by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. Representatives of the government, PPP and opposition attended the meeting. The speaker, describing the first round as a pleasant atmosphere, urged the parties to continue the talks in the same manner.

According to sources, the government’s demand to end the proposed long march on October 4 was among the key points.  On the other hand, the opposition put forward its demands and reservations. These include a meeting with the founder PTI and some issues related to them. No written agreement or final decision has been confirmed at this stage.

The opposition leadership also held mutual consultations before the talks. An attempt was made in the meeting to decide that the things that came up during the talks should not be immediately reported in the media. For this purpose, the proposal to issue a joint statement was also under consideration so that there is no misunderstanding between the parties.

An important aspect of the talks was also the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The government delegation discussed the law and order situation in the province and the possible impact of the long march. The opposition also explained its position and stressed on resolving political issues through talks.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has welcomed the talks. He says that political issues should be resolved through political means. He also expressed hope that as a result of the talks, an agreement can be reached to end the long march.

In the current situation, the issue of negotiations and protests are intertwined. For the opposition, the demands related to the founding PTI are important, while the government is linking the end of the long march to the progress of the negotiation process. These points will also be central to the upcoming talks.

With the date of October 4 approaching, time has also become important. For now, the path to continue the negotiations is open for both sides, but no final agreement has been confirmed. Only the progress in the upcoming meetings will make it clear whether the parties can reach a common formula or not.
