ISLAMABAD— The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved two new solar power projects in Karachi, aimed at promoting affordable and environmentally friendly electricity supply. The projects are being proposed by K-Electric (KE) and include the 150 MW “Deh Mitha Gar” and 120 MW “Deh Halkani” projects.

For both projects, Kot Addu Power Company Limited (KAPCO) submitted the lowest bid of Rs. 9.8 per unit (approximately 3.4 US cents), the lowest tariff bid ever in Pakistan. The projects are expected to save Rs. 3.4 billion annually and Rs. 86.9 billion in total over a 25-year period.

“These projects set a new benchmark for low-cost renewable energy in Pakistan,” said Munis Alvi, CEO of K-Electric. He added that the transparent bidding process demonstrates K-Electric’s commitment to a clean, affordable, and reliable energy future.

These projects will replace expensive fuel-based power generation with solar energy, which will not only provide affordable electricity to consumers but also save foreign exchange. It is estimated that these projects will save approximately US$765 million over a 25-year period.

These projects are part of K-Electric’s strategic plan to add 1,300 MW of renewable energy to its generation portfolio by 2030. This initiative is a significant step towards achieving the goals of a sustainable, affordable, and reliable power supply in Pakistan’s energy sector.
