LAHORE: Sugar prices have increased dramatically across the country in recent days, which has put the middle class under severe financial pressure. The price of sugar per kg has reached Rs 200 in various cities, while many markets are already facing shortages.
New price crisis in Karachi
Sugar is available at Rs 178 per kg in the wholesale markets of the capital city, while the price has reached Rs 190 at the retail level. Rates of Rs 200 per kg have also been reported in some areas of the city, which is pointing to an impending crisis.
Prices are also out of control in Lahore
In the provincial capital Lahore, the wholesale price of sugar has reached Rs 179, and the retail price has reached Rs 185 to 190 per kg. Market sources say that prices may increase further if supply is not restored immediately.
Peshawar: Rs 20 hike in two weeks
In Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, an increase of Rs 10 to 20 was recorded in the price of sugar during the past two weeks. According to shopkeepers, the retail price has reached Rs 200 per kg.
Quetta: Another Rs 5 hike in the price per kg
In Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, the price of sugar has increased by Rs 5 this week to Rs 190 per kg. Since the beginning of July, the price has increased by Rs 10 per kg.
50 kg sack crosses Rs 9,000 in Rawalpindi
The price of sugar in the wholesale market in Rawalpindi is Rs 182 to 185 per kg, while the price of a 50 kg sack has increased from Rs 9,000 to Rs 9,500.
According to market sources, the price at the local level may even exceed Rs 200 before the arrival of imported sugar.
