The government has slightly increased the price of petrol while reducing the price of high-speed diesel. The new prices will be effective from September 1, 2026.

According to the OGRA notification, the price of petrol has been increased by 77 paise per litre. After the increase, the new price of petrol has become Rs 342.79 paise per litre.

On the other hand, the price of high-speed diesel has been reduced by Rs 1.3 per litre. After the reduction, the new price of diesel has been fixed at Rs 370.41 per litre.

The new rates will be effective from 12 midnight between August 31 and September 1. Thus, consumers will buy petrol and diesel at the same new prices from the beginning of September.

A slight increase in the price of petrol may affect the expenses of citizens using motorcycles and cars. On the other hand, the reduction in the price of diesel has the potential to provide minor relief in the expenses of freight vehicles and public transport.

The change in diesel price could also have an impact on the agricultural sector, as tractors, tube wells and many other machines use diesel. However, the overall impact of a reduction of just over one rupee is likely to be limited.

The change in the prices of petroleum products in Pakistan is influenced by global oil prices, import costs, exchange rates, taxes and other relevant factors. OGRA plays a major role in the pricing process.

The recent change has seen the prices of both the major fuels go in different directions. Petrol has become more expensive while diesel has become cheaper. Therefore, the impact of this decision on the citizens and the business sector will not be the same.

According to the new rates, Petrol will be available at Rs 342.79 per litre and high-speed diesel at Rs 370.41 per litre at the beginning of September. Recent government and company records also show petrol prices at Rs 342.02 and diesel at Rs 371.44 per litre at the end of August.
