The ongoing talks between Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have been completed. The talks between the two sides ended in a positive atmosphere, after which the prospects of a staff-level agreement have become clear.
According to sources, the talks reviewed the implementation of Pakistan’s economic program and the progress made in various sectors. Officials briefed the IMF delegation on the steps taken by the government and the future course of action.
Official sources say that Pakistan is continuing to implement the terms of the IMF program. Along with improving fiscal discipline, steps are also being taken to increase revenues.
Improving revenue collection is an important part of the government’s economic agenda. According to officials, focus is being placed on expanding the scope of tax collection and improving the efficiency of the current system.
Progress on the issue of privatization was also considered an important part of the talks. The government is moving ahead with the privatization program to reduce the financial burden of government institutions and improve their management structure.
In the energy sector, measures to reduce losses of electricity distribution companies are also under consideration. In addition, it was assured to continue working on reforms to limit the growing circular debt in the gas sector.
After the negotiations are completed, the finalization of the staff-level agreement will be an important step. If the agreement is reached, it will be presented to the IMF Executive Board for approval.
This development is important for Pakistan in the context of economic stability. Implementation of fiscal discipline, energy sector reforms, and revenue improvement under the IMF program will continue to be of central importance in the next phase.
The government will now have to not only maintain the agreed measures but also bring practical results of economic reforms so that the progress of the program is maintained and fiscal pressure can be reduced.
