The Pakistan Stock Exchange ended trading on Friday with a slight negative trend, however, the performance of various major stocks within the market was not uniform. The KSE-100 index closed at 181,430.02 points after falling 346.57 points.

The KSE-100 index opened at 181,647.27 points. During the day, the index saw a high of 181,647.27 and a low of 180,620.08 points, reflecting the volatility during the session.

The index closed down by 0.19 percent. Although the market remained negative on a daily basis, the performance of the KSE-100 since the beginning of the year was positive by 0.63 percent, while the overall increase during the calendar year was recorded at 4.24 percent.

The total volume of the KSE-100 components in the market was 376.06 million shares. The data shows that buying in some prominent companies supported the index, but selling pressure in some shares of large companies kept the overall direction negative.

HUBC was the most prominent in terms of positive contribution. The company’s shares rose 70.55 points on the KSE-100, while MARI contributed 37.28 points.

Similarly, CNERGY contributed 33.36, GHGL 23.65 and BOP 22.38 points, limiting the index’s decline.

On the other hand, weakness in a few large stocks in the market had a significant impact on the overall index. ENGROH was the biggest depressant with a negative contribution of 131.63 points.

UBL contributed 70.66 points while MCB contributed 49.94 points. In addition, EFERT and FATIMA contributed 48.86 and 29.72 points respectively.

This market situation indicates that the separate performance of different sectors and large companies is playing a major role behind the daily movement of the index. On one hand, some stocks saw buying, on the other hand, a few heavyweights kept the index under pressure.

The other major benchmark KMI-30 also ended the trading day in the negative. The KMI-30 index closed at 255,651.73 points, down 483.04 points or 0.19 percent.

The KMI-30 started the day at 255,739.25 points, while it recorded a high of 256,199.53 points and a low of 254,470.88 points during the session.

HUBC also played a significant positive role in the KMI-30 and added 201.44 points to the index. MARI contributed 106.44, OGDC 45.39, FCCL 41.42 and ATRL 38.19 points in positive terms.

On the other hand, ENGROH made the largest negative contribution to the KMI-30 of 400.90 points. EFERT lost 139.52, PPL lost 62.58, MEBL lost 49.32, while MLCF lost 48.33 points.

KMI-30 has lost 0.65% since the beginning of the year, but the index is still up 2.86% on a calendar year basis.

Analytically, it is premature to call today’s limited decline a change in the larger trend of the market. Despite the overall annual performance of KSE-100 remaining positive, the buying and selling of various large stocks on a daily basis is influencing the direction of the market.

For investors, market volume, results of major companies, corporate announcements and the overall economic situation will also be important in the upcoming sessions, rather than just the index level. These factors can help more in understanding the next trend of the market.

Overall, the business day of August 7 was a slightly negative one for the Pakistan Stock Exchange, but instead of a complete one-sided sell-off in the market, a mixed trend was seen in various stocks. Positive performance of stocks like HUBC and MARI provided some support, while weakness in some major stocks including ENGROH, UBL and MCB kept KSE-100 away from a positive finish.
