A Pakistan Army Aviation Mi-17 helicopter crashed near Muzaffarabad, killing all on board. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed the crash and said that initially a technical fault was being considered as the possible cause of the crash, but an investigation has been launched to find out the final facts.
According to the ISPR, the crash occurred during take-off, and rescue teams immediately reached the scene. However, no personnel could be rescued alive.
Military authorities have set up a board of inquiry to determine the cause of the crash. According to defence experts, a technical fault has been identified initially, but only after a thorough investigation will it be clear whether the crash was simply a result of a mechanical problem or there were other factors behind it.
The crash comes at a time when Pakistan Army Aviation has faced several air accidents in the past. Over the past few years, several accidents involving military and rescue helicopters have been reported in Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulting in the loss of precious lives.
The Mi-17 helicopter is a Russian-made platform that is considered an important part of the Pakistan Army Aviation. This helicopter is used for military transport, logistical support, disaster relief operations and operational duties in difficult terrain. In the past, several of Pakistan’s Mi-17 helicopters have also been repaired and upgraded with the help of the US.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and other political leaders have expressed deep sorrow and grief after the accident. The national leadership, while appreciating the services of the martyrs, expressed condolences and solidarity with their families.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in his message that the nation will always remember the sacrifices of its brave soldiers who sacrifice their lives while performing their duties.
Defense observers say the recent accident once again highlights the need for continuous technical monitoring, safety standards and modern upgrades of the military air fleet. Although the Mi-17 is considered a reliable helicopter worldwide, its maintenance becomes of paramount importance in continuous operational use and in a complex geographical environment.
The exact cause of the accident will not be known until the investigation is completed, but the tragedy has left the entire country in mourning. The nation is paying tribute to the sacrifices of the martyrs while expressing solidarity with their families.
Experts believe that the inquiry report will not only explain the causes of the accident but also provide important recommendations for preventing such incidents in the future, which will be helpful in further strengthening the operational security of Pakistan Army Aviation.
