Karachi: Shazia Marri, the spokesperson for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has recently expressed grave apprehensions regarding the federal government’s unilateral decision-making. She cited the establishment of the Pakistan Maritime and Seaport Authority as an example.

Shazia Marri issued a forceful statement, asserting that the Sindh administration and the PPP were not consulted or informed about the establishment of the new authority. “The federal government persists in making decisions without involving its allies,” she observed.

Marri cautioned, “Our support is essential to the federal government,” in reference to the PPP’s backing of the coalition government. The government will collapse if the PPP withdraws its support. It appears that the PML-N is unable to acknowledge this reality.

She criticized the federal government for postponing the convening of the Council of Common Interests (CCI), a constitutionally mandated forum. “Despite the constitutional mandate that the Prime Minister convene the CCI every three months, it has been 11 months since the most recent meeting,” she stated, describing the delay as a “blatant violation of the Constitution.”

Marri urged the CCI to deliberate on the establishment of the Pakistan Maritime and Seaport Authority to guarantee inclusivity and transparency. She expressed her skepticism regarding the prudence of disregarding constitutional obligations in critical national matters, asserting, “Ignoring allies and provinces in such decisions only serves to exacerbate the divide.”

The PPP leader underscored the importance of governance that is founded on constitutional and legal principles, as it would be advantageous for all parties. She urged the federal government to take into account the input of allies and provinces before finalizing maritime sector policies, which include recommendations from the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and the task force on maritime affairs.

“This unilateral decision-making approach is both incomprehensible and detrimental,” she declared. “The gulf between the center and the provinces will only widen if the government continues down this path.”

Marri’s comments are indicative of the increasing tensions within the coalition government, as the PPP advocates for increased collaboration and adherence to constitutional norms.
